Don't Let The Bed Bugs Bite—At Montclair High School

A bed bug is found at the school.

Good night, sleep tight, and don't let the bed bugs bite—especially at school!

In recent months, the bed bug has re-emerged as a major bother in homes, schools, hotels, hospitals, and movie theaters around the country. Now, the six-legged, blood-sucking critter has been spotted at Montclair High School.

But was it really a bed bug? Apparently so. Bed bugs have no wings, are reddish in color, vary in size, have six legs, and are visible to the eye.

Here's the email sent out to parents today from James Earle, principal at Montclair High School:

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students:

On Wednesday, February 16th a staff member found a small insect on a classroom bookshelf. After securing the insect, the staff member indicated that it resembled a bedbug. We moved students and closed the room as a precaution. Also, we immediately alerted pest control to come and inspect the room. According to pest control, the insect was in fact a “bedbug”. Pest Control agents and Montclair High School custodial staff have performed a thorough and lengthy inspection of the room, furniture, supplies, and materials, and it was determined that there were no other insects in the room or in the area around the bookshelf. Three additional inspections have been performed subsequent to the initial inspection.

The room will continue to be closed and an environmentally safe pest control treatment will be administered in the room as a precaution. We are also inspecting all areas in both buildings as a preventative measure.
