Montclair Girl Scout Troop Earns Bronze

Eleven Girl Scouts from Edgemont and Northeast schools have worked two years to earn their Bronze Award.

Montclair Girl Scout Troop 44, a group of 11 Junior Girl Scouts from Edgemont and Northeast elementary schools, has worked for two years to earn their Bronze Award. The Bronze Award is given to Junior Girl Scouts who carry out a project that helps make a difference in their community. The girls of Troop 44 chose to do letterboxing for their project.

Letterboxing is an activity that immerses you in the outdoors. The goal is to find a "box" that contains small trinkets that reward you for your search. The girls of Troop 44 broke up into small groups and created their own letterboxes. Then they went to the secret location, hid the letterboxes and then created the directions to find the letterboxes. This is a fun activity that you do by finding the box by following clues left by the person who placed the box. You can find the clues to the letterboxes online at the designated website. The Juniors of Troop 44 worked with a younger Brownie troop and taught them about letterboxing. They then helped them to find the letterboxes the Juniors placed earlier in the month.

To earn the Bronze Award, each scout must work on the troop's project for at least 20 hours. To earn their hours, the troop learned about letterboxing, planned their project, gathered materials to create their own letterboxes, placed six boxes at Mills Reservation, wrote clues to the location of the letterboxes and finally met with a younger Brownie troop to teach them about letter boxing.

The girls have logged the location of their letterboxes on the web so that others can find them as well. Visit letterboxing.org/boxbyregion for clues to Troop 44's letterboxes. You will know if its troop 44's letterboxes if the ID tag is GSUSA44. To learn more about letterboxing, visit letterboxing.org.
