More Burglaries And Drunk Driving

This arrest information is supplied by the Montclair Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Only on Monday, Montclair Patch published a report from police that they'd handled six burglaries during the days around Thanksgiving while also nabbing a number of people driving while intoxicated.

On Tuesday, it appears that the trend continued.

Burglaries

On Nov. 29 at about 10:25 p.m., a burglary was reported at an apartment on Madison Avenue. The resident said she left her apartment at about 8 a.m. on that date. When she returned that night at about 10:10 p.m., she discovered that the rear door to the apartment had been forced in. She reported that a Dell laptop, valued at $500, a woman’s Schwinn mountain bike valued at $400, various gold jewelry valued at $5,000, and an orange-colored Apple iPod Nano valued at $180 had been stolen from her home.

While on the scene, police determined that a nearby apartment had also been burglarized. The victim was not home, but police were able to make contact with her. This resident said she left her apartment at about 5:40 a.m. on that date. It appears that the suspect got inside through a bedroom window. It was unknown what, if anything, was stolen from the home at the time of the report. There are no suspects at this time.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Detective Charles Cunningham at 973-509-4716.

Driving While Intoxicated

Also on Nov. 29, police were patrolling the area of Elm Street and Hawthorne Place just after 8 p.m. when a Jeep Compass crossed the double yellow line and almost struck the patrol car head on. The Jeep continued to travel north and was seen nearly striking a parked car in the area of Elm Street and Fulton Street. Police then saw the car parked on Fulton Street with a man, later identified as Don Harris, walking away from it. Police spoke to Harris and noticed the odor of alcohol on his breath. Harris, 45, of Montclair, was arrested after he failed to adequately perform field sobriety tests. Further investigation revealed an open container of brandy in the vehicle. Harris was found to have warrants for his arrest issued by Paterson, with bail set at $1,500, and Glen Ridge, with bail set at $1,150. He was also issued motor vehicle summons for driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to a breathalyzer, driving while intoxicated within one thousand feet of a school, failure to keep right, careless driving, failure to exhibit documents, driving while suspended, and possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle. He was later turned over to members of the Glen Ridge Police Department.
