Mounties Dismiss Bengals And Start Talking Randolph

Montclair defeats Bloomfield, 47-21, in annual Turkey Classic

You could say that 'Randolph' was the dirty little word this week during practice and around the high school when it came to the Mounties football team.

Indeed, the Mounties head coach John Fiore and the staff made sure that Bloomfield was on their mind this week before they could even think of Randolph for the Group 4 North 1 state sectional title game on December 4 at the New Meadowlands Stadium.

And, just as they were told, quarterback Khalif Herbin and the Mounties made sure that they did not look by Bloomfield in the annual Thanksgiving Day game as they struck early and often.

Beyond scoring on the first three drives to take a 21-7 lead, Montclair made sure that they would not be upset on Thanksgiving by taking care of the Bengals, 47-21, to win the seventh straight game in this series that dates back 80 years.

"I found a Web site that had the Randolph videos of their games and I was itching to watch it," said Herbin, who added that he did not watch the video. The junior signal caller said it all came to the opening kickoff and the first quarter, noting "we wanted to get off to a fast start."

And Fiore added about what he told the players this week. "Next week is next week and think only of this week," said Fiore, whose team raised its record to 7-4 on the season and won its fifth game in a row.

Herbin led the way in the first six minutes of the game with a pair of touchdown passes and an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Otis Wright added a one-yard touchdown and Tyrone El intercepted a Marek pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.

With the El interception for a score, Montclair took a 33-7 lead into halftime. Crutchfield would score on a couple of touchdown runs in the second half.

For Crutchfield, who usually came in passing downs during the season, he was glad to get a shot to carry the ball. "It felt good to run the ball," said Crutchfield, who ran eight times for 34 yards including the two touchdowns against Bloomfield.

In the end, Herbin would just play a little more than a quarter of football. "They did not tell me, but I thought that would happen," said Herbin about playing one quarter. Herbin had 34 yards on the ground while completing five of seven passing attempts for 127 yards in the air.

Crutchfield would take most of the snaps the rest of the way and got what he wanted in running the ball. Crutchfield would score on a pair of rushing touchdowns including another one-yard sneak in the fourth quarter that capped the scoring.

On the defensive side of the ball the likes of Avery Ellis, Julien Pinnix-Odrick, and Aamad Bush would keep the Bloomfield offense, led by the likes of Michael Carter, Doug Collins, Keith Marek, and Malik Copfer, in check for most of the game.

In the first half, the first string defense only gave up a Marek touchdown pass to Copfer in the first quarter. The point after was good and the Bengals sliced the Montclair lead to 13-7. But Herbin extinguished the hopes of Bloomfield's upset thoughts by taking the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for the touchdown. A two-point conversion failed but the Mounties were ahead 19-7.
