Montclair Mounties won the Wildcat Shootout at Becton High School in Rutherford, New Jersey last Thursday and two days later won the University of Delaware 7-on-7 tournament in Newark, Delaware. The Mounties varsity is 25-2 in 7-on-7 competition this year.
Wildcat Shootout
The Mounties, led by quarterback Nate Crutchfield and receivers Khalif Herbin, Mikey Smith, Darin Davis, and Russ Walton, were undefeated in 13 games. They took home the trophy in the Wildcat Shootout after beating De Paul Catholic in the semi-finals and beating Bergen Catholic 26-20 in an exciting game that went down to the last play. The defense held strong and stopped Bergen Catholic on the 3 yard line as time expired.
The Mounties outscored their opponents 137 to 45. Great performances were had by Khalif and Russ Walton. Nate Crutchfield threw for 20 touchdowns. The defense shut out four of the six teams they played in the tournament.
Stephaun Marshall, Donte Bellamy, and Avery Ellis had particularly strong performances on defense. The Becton tournament also gave opportunities for the Mountie linemen to shine including Julian Pinnix, Brandon Taylor, Dan Cano, Greg DeFranco, and Amos Cambell. They finished in a 3-way-tie for first in the linemen drills competition.
Also, the Mountie tug of war team anchored by Amos Campbell, Brendan Taylor, Julian Pinnix-Odrick, Greg Defranco and Dan Cano out-pulled their competition.
University of Delaware
The Mounties won the Delaware tournament in fine fashion by beating Red Lion Christian (Bear, DE) in the finals by a score of 26 - 20. The win was especially sweet as the Mounties avenged their prior loss to Red Lion in the quarterfinals at the Rutgers 7-on-7.
The Mounties outscored opponents 150 to 44 and the defense registered another four shutouts in the tournament. Nate Crutchfield threw for 22 touchdowns and Khalif Herbin led all receivers, but Tahaj Williams had the game winner vs. Red Lion with a minute to go.
The defense at Delaware was led by Stephaun Marshall, Avery Ellis, Donte Bellamy, Rashawn Barrett, Mike Kornegay, Kyree Silas, Isaiah Dorval, and Russ Walton.
