Mounties Move By Ridgewood For Victory

Montclair receives another surprise home game.

Montclair quarterback Khalif Herbin showed why he is considered one of the best players in North Jersey. The junior signal caller ran for three touchdowns and threw for another two touchdowns as the fourth-seeded Mounties moved on to the semi-finals of Group 4 North 1 with a 38-28 victory at home over Ridgewood on Saturday afternoon.

As it turns out Montclair (5-4) will get another home game as eighth-seeded Union City stunned top-seeded West Orange, 19-14. The game is expected to be Saturday at Woodman Field at 1 p.m.

It will be a rematch of the season opener when Montclair shocked Union City, 27-22, as the Mounties won on a last-second touchdown.

Herbin ran for 260 yards on the ground while also passing for 180 yards to lead Montclair. Herbin hit his second touchdown pass in the late going of the third quarter, this time to Aamad Bush on an 11-yard touchdown strike. The point after failed, but Montclair led 23-14.

Ridgewood though came back as Kyle Gibson was the lone thorn in the site of the Mounties defense.

Gibson rumbled 59 yards for a touchdown and the point after was good to cut the Montclair lead to 23-21 in the early going of the fourth quarter.

But every time that Ridgewood struck, it was the Mounties and Herbin who would come back to put another score on the board.

This time the junior would sprint 25 yards for a touchdown. A two-point conversion with Scott Walker hitting Rashawn Barrett gave Montclair a 31-21 lead midway through the last quarter.

Ridgewood did come back to make it close as Frank Paleno ran in from 10 yards out. The point after was good as the Mounties still lead, but this time, 31-28.

Herbin finished the scoring and also the Maroons late in the fourth quarter with his third rushing touchdown, this time for 13 yards.
