Mounties To The Rescue For Struggling Seniors
A new program pairs Mounties with senior citizens in Montclair.
Help is on the way for Montclair seniors struggling with difficult chores. Now they can call on one of the strong young fellows on the Montclair High School Mounties football team to rake the leaves, shovel the snow, clip the hedges, or put out
those heavy recyclables. And, if new technology has baffled a certain senior, the young students are available to educate him/her about the mysteries of the computer as well.
New MHS football head coach John Fiore has made community service a top priority and said he will urge players to participate in the new "Adopt A Grand-Friend" volunteer program co-sponsored by the football team and the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee to the Township Council.
"We estimate that there are already more than 30 seniors in our town who are requesting these services," said Councilor Kathryn Weller-Demming, who serves as the council liaison to the SCAC, at an initial meet-and-greet gathering held Sunday at the Furlong Field House.
At the gathering, Annette Korn said "I'm looking for a way to advance my computer skills. Barbara Chase, who found last year's frequent snow storms a real challenge, said "I have to admit I just can't do this all myself any more." And Pauline Davis said she's happy to take advantage of any assistance with both shoveling snow and raking leaves.
"Don't worry, we're here to help out!" responded Chase Starks, a senior at MHS who
plays defensive end. "Whatever you need: moving furniture, technology, lawn care."
