Newark Man Arrested for Montclair Burglary
Saveon Christian Hayles, 23, was taken in by police and charged last week and may be suspected in other burglaries, police say.
A 23-year-old Newark man has been arrested and charged with one count of burglary, though Montclair police said he is a suspect in additional burglaries.
Montclair detectives arrested Saveon Christian Hayles in Newark on Oct. 18, according to police. They were assisted by Newark police officers.
Hayles is charged with one count of burglary and theft, according to police. He is currently being held on $75,000 bail.
Detective Sgt. Wilhelm Young said Hayles is likely to be charged with more burglaries as the investigation continues.
“[Hayles] has a pretty good idea that he is the main suspect for what was going on up there” in Upper Montclair, said Young.
Young would not say which burglary Hayles is linked to, or which other burglaries he may be suspected of committing.
During the past month, there have been numerous break-ins to Upper Montclair homes. Last week, Montclair Police Lt. Angel Roman said electronics were the primary target in many of the recent burglaries.
Young said the department has been investigating Hayles for some time. The arrest, he added, highlights the persistent work by the police department.
“Those investigations are very difficult,” said Young. “It is occurring in the middle of the night; guys are wearing gloves; you have very little forensics left behind. It is painstaking and it takes a lot of effort for the guys in the bureau.”
