Not Your Average Bake Sale

Montclair residents bake up scrumptious gourmet goodies to support Toni's Kitchen

Last week, Patch told you about a group of people raising money for Toni’s Kitchen by participating in the (BAH) bike ride.  Tomorrow, on September 6, residents from Patton Place, Nassau Road and Macopin Road (aka PaNaMa to the locals) will hold a bake sale to benefit Toni’s Kitchen.

Alice Hurley, who is heading up the sale effort, is also part of the group of cyclists from Montclair who will participate in the 200 mile BAH bike ride to raise money for Toni’s Kitchen.  “I wanted to bring more presence to an organization like Toni’s Kitchen," said Hurley.  "Montclair is a town with a lot of wealth; it is easy to forget there are many who go hungry.”

Hurley promises that this is not your average bake sale with lackluster box brownies and uninspired chocolate chip cookies.  “We (PaNaMa residents) have a block party every year where we have a bake-off and the competition gets pretty heated, our neighborhood is rich in bakers.”

Items you can expect to find will be gourmet chocolate brownies, Oreo truffles, Key Lime pie, cheesecake, scones and more. “We are also going to be auctioning off a luscious apple pie, baked by our neighbor Amy Sgarro,” Hurley notes.

Apparently Sgarro's apple pie has quiet a reputation in PaNaMa. "Last year, at the block party, people were fighting over the crumbs of the pie, which gave us the idea to auction one off at the sale; the bidding is already up to $60!"  Officially the bidding will go until the end of the sale tomorrow at 5pm.

The bake sale will take place Tuesday, September 6, on the porch of 10 Nassau Road, from 3pm to 5pm, rain or shine. Hurley also wants folks to know they are also accepting public donations of baked goods as part of the fundraising efforts.  If you would like to participate or want to bid on this infamous pie and cannot make it to the sale, email Hurley at alicehurley@aol.com.
