Occupy Montclair Demonstration Set For Saturday

Organizer is concerned about disparity between rich and poor in Montclair

Environmental activist Pat Kenschaft has organized yet another Occupy Montclair demonstration on Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the corner of Bloomfield and South Fullerton avenues.

She says that all are welcome.

"Bring your own sign on any topic that interests you. Or borrow one; several will be available," she said. "Or just swell the crowd."

When asked about her message, Kenschaft said she is concerned about the disparity between the rich and poor in Montclair.

"That's what motivates me, but others have other motivations, which is all right with me," she said. "It's my one little contribution to a movement that I consider important. I don't have the health and energy to do much more."

In February, Kenschaft and about nine other people demonstrated in the same location, just across from the Anthropologie store.

At the time, she again admitted that the goals of the group are fluid, but the messages conveyed by the participant's placards were clear. One sign said "Economic Inequality Destroys Nations" while another said "I'll Believe Corporations Are People When Texas Executes One."

Similar demonstrations have been organized by Kenschaft in Montclair in the past. In November, about 30 people turned out on Church Street, carrying placards. In December, about a dozen people showed up.

Meanwhile, the Occupy Wall Street movement seems to be gaining momentum again following a quiet winter.

Sleeping bags started appearing on the corner of Wall and Broad streets across from the New York Stock Exchange on April 9. Occupy organizers recently announced that the movement would be planning a comeback in the spring and summer.
