Taking Action: Montclair Girl Scouts

Scouts helped collect supplies for the American Red Cross.

Members of Girl Scout Troop 20059 in Montclair, with co-leaders Dianne Garland (left in attached photo) Emilie Gustavsen (center) and Mary Anne Vaughn (right), recently delivered comfort kits to the Red Cross Montclair location at 63 Park Street.

Community service was the final step of the Girl Scouts’ Agent of Change Journey, allowing the troop to receive their three-part badge. The scouts, all 4th grade students at Northeast Elementary School, collected donated items with help from fellow students at the school and assembled 54 comfort kits for the Red Cross.

Comfort kits contain personal care items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant and shampoo and are distributed in Red Cross shelters following large disasters and are provided by Red Cross volunteers to families displaced by home fires.

In addition to the comfort kits, the troop donated several boxes of delicious Girl Scout cookies to the Red Cross to offer to blood donors at local Red Cross blood drives. The Red Cross applauds the work done by the troop and appreciates the support from the community to help provide Red Cross Disaster Relief.
