The Scoop On Montclair's Pools

What are the fees and hours this summer?

A lot of Montclair residents have expressed a bit of confusion over pool fees and hours this year.

Montclair Patch asked township officials for all the details—and here they are.

The pool rates were raised for last season (2011) but not again for 2012:

Pool Rates for Season Passes:
Family: (2 adults and 2 or more children): from $180 to $225
Adult: from $60 to $75
Child: from $42 to $55
Senior: from $18 to 25

Daily Pool Rates:
Resident Adult: from $12 to $15
Resident Child: from $6 to $10
Non-Resident Guest (with member): from $18 to $20

Pool hours were reduced for the 2010 season because of budget cuts—however, they were cut to the hours that were in place prior to the 2007 season.

Pool hours were extended in 2007 to Monday through Friday from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m.; weekends and holidays 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (So these hours were in effect for only three seasons.)

The 2012 Pool season opens Friday, June 22 (meaning all pools open) and closes Monday, Labor Day, September 3. Essex Pool will open on weekends from 12 Noon - 7:00 p.m. beginning on Memorial Day Weekend, May 26-28.

Essex Pool will close August 19. All pools close for the season September 3.

Pool hours:
Monday - Friday 1:00–7:00 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday 12:00–7:00 p.m.

When we win the next Powerball jackpot we’ll pay down Montclair’s $230 million debt. Then we’ll be able to afford more pool hours and maybe one kiddie pool.

Montclair has numbers 3 6 26 35 46 pb 16 in Wednesday’s $146 million drawing.

I went to Essex Pool this weekend and the concession stand is open at Clary Anderson Arena. I was told that it will be open until July, when the day camp starts. They should open it every weekend and see how it does. There are some people who would like to have a concession stand at one of the pools. The stand is there, we should take advantage of it. If this can make the town a few bucks in concession sales or more pool passes sold, so much the better.

Instead of either opening all of the pools until 8:00 PM seven days a week as they did in the past three years or closing all them at 7:00 PM seven days a week, why not pick out one pool and have it open until 8:00 PM three days a week, say Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Commuters are taxpayers, too, and ought to be able to enjoy the services that they are subsidizing. Maybe we can sell more pool passes.
When we first moved here thirty years ago, Mountainside Pool was open until 8:00 PM every Wednesday for adult swim. Both Mountainside and Essex are located near train stations, which makes them convienient to commuters. Mountainside gets more late afternoon sun, but which pool is a detail that can be worked out.
Montclair needs to get the most bang for its buck from its facilities.

Do the Montclair pools still only allow Montclair residents to join? To me the easiest way to get more revenue is to open it up to residents of other local towns. I live in Bloomfield and would have been willing to pay a higher non resident rate in order to have pool access.

I think the hours are terrible! 6 hrs a day on the weekdays and 7 hours on weekend! They are certainly losing money on people like us who say, forget it~! My husband would never be able to go!
