Two Montclair men and two juveniles were charged in an attempted robbery involving a weapon that later turned out to be a pellet gun, according to Montclair Police. 

On Jan. 23 at around 8 p.m., a man driving in a Nissan picked up two individuals at the intersection of Grove Street and Glenridge Avenue who asked for a ride to the south end of Montclair. 

As the driver began to pull away with the two individuals in the car, the passenger sitting in the front seat pulled out what appeared to be a black handgun and told the driver to go to the nearby TD Bank and withdraw $400. 

The driver told police the passenger with the gun said he would “blow his head off.”

When the driver and two passengers got to the bank at Lackawanna Station and began walking toward the ATM, the victim was able to run away. He immediately called the police.

After police spoke with the victim, a car was stopped as it was speeding with four men inside near Elm Street and Hawthorne Avenue. 

Investigation found a Smith & Wessson pellet gun inside the car. 

Montclair residents Travis Hubbard, 22, and Marquis Staton, 21, were both arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery. The two men were taken to the Essex County Jail and were held on $100,000 bail. 

The two juveniles were charged accordingly. 

The investigation is still ongoing, according to Montclair Police.
