Winning Mounties Are 'Goin' To The Chip'

Montclair trounces Union City 35-12 to advance to state championship game

The Montclair Mounties are 'goin' to the chip' advancing to the North 1, Group 4 State Championship Game at The New Meadowlands after a 35-12 thrashing of Union City on Saturday at home.

"Coach talked to us before the game and he said 'play for everybody else, not yourself' and I kept that in mind and thought about the thousands of fans who came out to see us play and I played for them and my family," said junior quarterback Khalif Herbin.

Herbin was a staple of the Mounties offense and proved instrumental in scoring the game's first touchdown off of a double reverse pass from Mike Smith which went 51 yards for the game's first score at the 8:45 mark. "I knew that was going to be a good one to get us ahead, get us some breathing room, we knew that was a play we were going to go to," said Herbin.

The ensuing kickoff resulted in a fumble recovered by the Mounties at the Union City 20-yard line. Running back Anthony Webb found no problem giving fans a "real life instant replay" of the play before which was called back on a holding penalty and scampered to the end-zone making it 14-0 before the 8:00 mark of the first quarter.

The score remained the same into the half when Union City received the second half kickoff on what needed to be a crucial drive for them the Mounties defense stuffed the Union City attack like they did all game with a 3 and out. "I think we played great defensively, everybody is working well as a unit," said defensive lineman Julian Pinnix-Odrick. "We were making sure we played against counter and trap," added Pinnix-Odrick. Pinnix-Odrick netted two of the teams five sacks against the Union offense, both on crucial third and fourth downs.

The offense refused to let up and like crows circling a carcass sensed the end was near for Union City. Herbin, true to his "game over" moniker, took a punt return 20 yards down to the 21 yard line and after a few nice runs sliced his way for his second score of the game with 2:21 left in the third. "They weren't letting me get outside like I like to, but the cut back lanes were there so I used that to the best of my ability," said Herbin. Herbin finished with 126 rush yards, 51 receiving yards, and 2 touchdowns.

Once the Mounties were up 21-0 the team cruised to victory on the legs of their trio of running backs Otis Wright, Anthony Webb, and Stephaun Marshall. Wright capped off a 6 play 29 yard scoring drive with 7:29 left to make it 28-0 and on the teams first play from scrimmage after a Union City touchdown Wright answered with a 49 yard td of his own to bury Union City at 35-6. Wright finished with 70 rushing yards on the day while teammates Webb and Marshall added 19 and 63 yards respectively.

The Mounties now look forward to a meeting with 10-1 Randolph at The New Meadowland Stadium. "We just need to play solid, steady defense, don't over pursue, play our gaps do our assignments, and I think we can do it," said Pinnix-Odrick.
