The space formerly occupied by Luna Stage is for sale.
Let's call this a modern spin on community planning—Patch's version of a charette, a digital drawing board where all ideas are on the table. In an occasional column, we'll present a new vacant space and ask you to tell us what you think would be the best use. Forget what zone it's in, ignore setback regulations, dump lot coverage rules, and all the other zoning jargon that puts people most to sleep. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community? We launched this new occasional feature a few months ago by focusing on the now vacant spot at 622 Valley Road in Upper Montclair, the former home of Five Guys Burgers and Fries. (Tuscany, an Italian restaurant, will open in this space soon!) …

Some businesses are closing their doors; others are opening up shop.
"We don't discriminate between people and pets." That was the motto espoused by the owners of A Well Feathered Nest, a home and gift boutique for people and pets that celebrated its grand opening only last October. Located at 547 Valley Road, the unique shop is nearly directly across the street from the pet store in Upper Montclair known as Iggy's Place. But now, according to a new sign on the window, the owners appear to be liquidating their inventory and closing down. The store is closed on Mondays so Montclair Patch will check in with the owners on Tuesday. Another recently opened business that is now selling its contents and closing down is Four Eyes & Ears at 47 Watchung Plz. Owner Thomas Hanus celebrated a grand opening at that …
Data shows Essex County staying even with recycling, while many counties are recycling less waste than in mid-1990s.
Residents in Essex County are doing a pretty good job recycling their waste. In a county where 1.57 million tons of waste was generated, 61.6 percent was recycled, according to NJ Spotlight's latest interactive map. Overall, New Jerseyans are recycling less of their waste than they did in the mid-1990s, data from the state Department of Environmental Protection show. At the peak, residents across the state were recycling 61 percent of what they discarded in 1996 and 1997. That number dropped to 57 percent statewide in 2009. Prior to the enactment of the state’s mandatory recycling law a quarter of a century ago, 10 percent or less of waste was recycled. The law initially set a goal of recycling 25 percent of the municipal solid waste …

Anthony Robert Salon opens in spacious, new Verona venue.
Things are still relatively quiet at 279 Bloomfield Ave., the new home of Jerseylicious reality star Anthony Lombardi’s salon, but that’s just because they’re settling in. This week is the salon’s soft opening, but Lombardi is planning a grand opening for next month. The sleek new space was a big undertaking for Lombardi, who has just about quadrupled his size from the tiny, four-chair salon he first opened in Verona six years ago. And, as with all construction projects, this one wasn’t quite completed by the time Lombardi had hoped. He planned on opening in April. When asked to describe how the transition went, the ever-energetic and optimistic Lombardi said, “So far so good.” But he admitted he’s still “trying to figure out where …
Chef-Owner Bobby Wong takes dining to a whole new level at DelMonico Steak & Beyond.
Editor's Note: In an earlier version of this story appearing on several Patch sites, we reported Rare, located at 440 Main St. in Little Falls, was out of business. The steakhouse is open and accepting reservations. Patch regrets the error. Approaching its two-year anniversary this September, Delmonico Steak & Beyond has established itself as the go-to place in Cedar Grove. That’s because owner and restaurateur Bobby Wong carefully considered the location, the community and the residents. “I think about the people,” Wong said of his plans for the space when he bought it in 2010. Formerly Jim Dandy’s Rib Joint, the restaurant Wong had envisioned was utterly different. He designed a restaurant that would suit the needs of the community. “…

Although model Christy Turlington Burns may not want any gifts, flowers, or chocolates this Mother's Day, a few Montclair moms might. But how will local wine stores fare?
On May 1, it became legal for wineries of a certain size to direct ship wine to New Jersey costumers. It's great news for New Jersey wine growers, but perhaps not so great for local wine shops. The fear of opponents to the new law — signed by Gov. Christie on January 17 — is that direct shipping will erode sales of wine in local retail shops around the state, potentially hurting local business and costing local jobs. A major opponent of the bill that allowed direct shipping was Assemblyman John Cryan (D-Union), whose family owns Cryan's tavern in South Orange. In an Op-Ed piece on newjerseynewsroom.com, Cryan explained that he supported an alternative bill that he felt would not threaten local shops: I sponsored the Assembly bill that …

It could be an "arts building" serving any number of local semi-professional and professional performance groups on a cooperative basis. Wouldn't that be great? Probably not cost-effective, but wonderful to think about. Or, what about a satellite facility of NJPAC where workshops and such could be held for NJPAC's visiting performers who wanted to interface in a deeper way. Or a downtown training…   more ›
