The phrase Big Data has become virtually commonplace in everyday conversation, as well as in industry blogs and publications, but what exactly is the power of Big Data? Last week, we talked about the potential of Big Data for retail and the opportunities that it would create for both retailers and consumers. When most people think about Big Data, they think of traditional technology firms — IBM, Microsoft — and the most powerful social network in the world, Facebook. That is where the conversation usually ends, however, and this misses one of the most important potential plays in the world of Big Data

Twitter.

Yesterday Twitter purchased the data analytics firm Grip, which has direct access to the “firehose” of all of Twitter’s activity. By having access to this data stream, as well as the ability to sort, filter, and aggregate data into meaningful forms, Grip then resells these reshaped data streams to other firms. Real-time data about advertising, TV shows, movies, product releases, and news events provides invaluable feedback to the firms that are producing this content. As the media field shifts from distribution providers to content providers, the value of this real-time information will only prove more valuable.
