More Effective Meetings

Meetings.

Everybody has them, some people organize them, but if you were to ask how many people actually enjoy going to meetings, the percentage would probably not be all that high. Meetings are one of the most dreaded parts of corporate culture – they can start late, wander off course, run over time, result in no definitive plans for future action, and have no follow-up items sent out to ensure progress.

Meetings and the wasted time that is often associated with them can be a tremendous drag on productivity and employee morale at firms, no matter what the size. Whether the firm has 100 people or 100,000, wasted time is wasted time – and time is money, as we all know.

There have been many books, employee guidelines, and checklists at how to have more effective meetings, but unfortunately, a lot of these recommendations can get lost in the day to day shuffle. These lists, checklists, and recommendations can also be overwhelming or impractical depending on your status in the organization. This might explain why so many of these recommendations and suggestions are not implemented.

Below are a few tips and suggestions that I have found in my internet research that can be implemented on a day-to-day basis.

1) Set an agenda
2) Distribute an agenda prior to the meeting
3) Follow-up
4) Determine the next meeting date
5) No multi-tasking

While not a guarantee of more efficient meetings, these tips and strategies can certainly help to improve the effectiveness of meetings.
