Google Street View Car Spotted Around Essex County

Did you see the souped-up Suburu cruising through town?

A Google Street View Car — with its panoramic cameras mounted on the roof — was cruising through downtown Verona Wednesday.

The white Suburu hatchback with the Google Maps design was spotted on Park Place, near Prudential New Jersey Properties and the Lakeside Deli at 3:30 in the afternoon.

Google Maps' street view project launched in 2007 with SUVs equipped with cameras, lasers and a GPS device driving around collecting images around the United States, according to information available on Google.com.

The technology has gotten more sophisticated, to say the least.

Custom-designed street view cars, as well as snow mobiles, trikes, trolleys and trekkers, have been developed to collect 360-degree panoramic views of locations on all seven continents, according to Google.com.

The site confirmed street views are currently being taken around Essex County and more than a dozen other New Jersey counties.
