A Healthy Combo: Tasti D-Lite, Planet Smoothie to Open in Montclair

Frozen dessert company featured on "Sex and the City" and "30 Rock."

A new business in Montclair is a two-in-one stop for those seeking healthy fast food options.

Tasti D-Lite, a low-calorie frozen dessert concept, and Planet Smoothie will open at 349 Bloomfield Ave. Friday, the owners announced in a release.

Two couples are behind the dual-franchise — longtime Montclair resident Dale Williams and his cousin Linda Morton, along with their spouses Estelle and Ron.

Williams, a former IT professional, was a regular customer when he worked in New York of the frozen dessert featured on Sex and the City, The Apprentice and 30 Rock.

“Having spent many years working in NYC, Tasti D-Lite became a staple for us anytime we were in the city — which included most weekdays,” he said.

“I have always had a desire to further invest in the community that has embraced our families for over 100 years. We are honored to have the opportunity to open a business and bring these two successful brands here.”

Norton, Dale’s cousin, moved back to New Jersey recently after living in Texas with her husband for more than 15 years. With their children off at college, the couple was looking for a business opportunity.

Local Montclair architect Sionas Architecture designed the space to blend a modern aesthetic with the 90-year Pill Building storefront. Historical Montclair images and artifacts will be on display in the shop.

More than 100 flavors of Tasti D-Lite will be available each day. The frozen dessert contains no artificial sweeteners and is lower in calories, carbs and sugar than ice cream and frozen yogurt, the release said.

Planet Smoothie offers more than 30 flavors of freshly prepared smoothies with low calories, low sugar and high protein options. The smoothies serve as snacks as well as meal replacements.

A grand opening celebration is planned for Saturday, Sept. 7.
