If you live in or around Montclair, riding DeCamp’s #66 bus (or #33) is kind of like a rite of passage.
During certain times of the day, the bus is fast. It zips along Route 3. It’s convenient too—stopping to pick up passengers all over the Township.
Trouble is—the bus is sometimes late, often overcrowded, and if you have to stand, you might puke. And now the bus is getting more expensive.
Fares are going up by $.50. Kick off date—Valentine’s Day. (Sweet.) It’s the first increase since December 2008.
Josh Crandall of Clever Commute says the hike wouldn’t be such a big deal if the company knew how to communicate with its customers—about both fare issues and traffic ones.
“DeCamp has had text alerts for two years now, and they haven’t sent a lot of them," he notes.
He says it’s frustrating for customers who take the time to share their cell phone numbers.
Crandall says the company should take advantage of the Web to keep customers informed. The transportation company services roughly 8,000 riders daily.
Riders like Trae Bodge Napierala say they understand price increases are sometimes necessary, “but wishes DeCamp would get it together and offer monthly passes.”
She says the convenience would go a long way with patrons!
Michelle Kovacs commutes to New York City four or five days a week. She usually takes the train, but “keeps a bus ticket handy in case the trains meltdown.”
She says the bus fare increase is tough—especially when you add on subway fare. “It costs hundreds of dollars a year just to get in and out of NYC, which is enough to make one consider a career closer to home," she says. "I recently went back to school to be a teacher, so even though I'll probably have to drive, I'll never get stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel again.”
