Montclair Locksmith Ready to Hand Over Keys

You can't help but smile when you read the locksmith for sale in Watchung Plaza is a "turnkey operation." But this business has been operating in Montclair for almost 40 years — and that's no joke.

The owner of one of the oldest businesses in Watchung Plaza is ready to hand over his keys.

After nearly 40 years, Bob Fraser listed his eponymous locksmith shop on Zillow.com this week.

“I’m 69-years-old and I’d like to retire and still enjoy my life and do some things, rather than drop dead behind the counter,” said a jovial Fraser Wednesday.

The longtime township resident started out working for other locksmiths in the 1970s before striking out on his own. He ran the business from his home before opening a storefront at 129 Watchung Plaza.

The regular turnover of houses in Montclair and surrounding towns has kept him busy over the years, resulting in a 12,000-name-long customer list.

That list — along with his inventory, equipment and two customized Dodge vans — are included in the $150,000 sale price.

Fraser hopes to lock up a deal before he turns 70 next June.

His retirement goal is to pack up and explore the country with his wife before deciding on a place to settle.

“I plan to travel and see the National Parks of the United States in a motor home,” he said.

Bob Fraser Security Center is a veteran in the Watchung Plaza Business District, along with Watchung Deli, American Royal Hardware and Mr. Dino’s Pizzeria.
