Readers' Choice Winner: Watchung Deli Tops The List

Other popular choices included Nicolo's, Belgiovine, and Rosario's.

Operating since 1926, —by the Watchung train station at 117 Watchung Avenue—has become something of an institution.

And this week it's also become your Readers' Choice pick for best deli in Montclair.

The popular Watchung Deli, owned by two couples—Gary and Maureen Kiffer and Robert and Jeanne Johannsen—is something of an old fashioned shop that didn't even accept credit cards until April 2011.

The deli serves sandwiches, including breakfast sandwiches, meats, salads, cheeses, desserts, and much more. Some sandwiches are named. A Murnick sandwich, for example, includes a chicken cutlet, buffalo chicken, melted alpine swiss cheese, and honey mustard—all piled onto a toasted Italian roll.

Customer Kelly McDonald said that "not only is the food at Watchung Deli great, there couldn't be a nicer group of owners. They are a Montclair institution."

Behind Watchung Deli, in second place, was at 6 Baldwin St. Open since 1967, Nicolo's is a family-owned and operated business that offers wholesale and retail bakery goods. Nicolo's workers say they pride themselves on the freshness and creativity of both the bakery and the deli.

Also raking in a lot of votes were at 714 Bloomfield Ave. and at 252 Park St.

All in all, it looks like Montclair residents have an awful lot of great deli choices.

Thanks everyone for voting!
