Vote: The Best Pizza in Montclair

We've narrowed down the choices but still aren't sure which is the best

Montclair has plenty of places in town where you can get a pizza, so before asking for your favorite, we tried to narrow it down by conducting an informal survey of about 100 readers.

This Montclair Patch editor thought she'd be overwhelmed with votes for or But the responses were extremely varied.

So which establishments took the pizza prize? Ultimately, and got the most nods. Also garnering a lot of positive comments: Ruthie's Bar-B-Q, , and

So, now comes the second part of our little business query: when you vote on the choices.

Below are the few that we felt were the standouts. So tell us which one's the absolute best in Montclair and explain why in the comments section below.

That sounds good.. will have to try it!

Agree with you Justin! Soho is the best and more people should try it!! Once we switched, there was no going back.

SoHo pasta pizza

Pasta pizza? Will have to try that Darlene..

I agree about Soho and the owner is really a great guy. Soho uses a lot of herbs in their sauce and their crust is a bit thicker than New York style, so be warned. I also like Villa Victoria if I want a New York style pie, but between the lack of parking and atrocious service, I just can't give them my business anymore. The spicy sausage pizza (Texas) at Ruthie's is to die for, but I rarely find someone to share it with as my wife is vegetarian.

I forgot to add Da Vinci's to my list - BUT you have to tell them thin crust
Shelley Emling (Editor) February 15, 2012 at 06:21 PM
For me, the thinner the crust the better.

Last I tried Da Vinci's they had lost it completely. Can anyone comment on a recent experience? Is there a reason that Salute was left off the balloting?
Shelley Emling (Editor) February 15, 2012 at 06:54 PM
When I asked about 100 people their favorite pizza place, no one mentioned Salute.. is the pizza there good?
montclair feed February 15, 2012 at 08:33 PM
Da Vincis - We do get pizza from there often.... It's the only pizza my wife will eat ..Margerette thin crust style. YES, right now it seems to run by a bunch of "kids" if that's what you mean.... but the pizza tastes great!
Crafty Spiker February 15, 2012 at 08:55 PM
Salute - the pizza is very much like Ah'Pizz but, in my opinion, just a half notch down from Ah'Pizz - which is to say very good.

I think we should ban pizza becaue it makes kids crazy, oh that was the ice cream trucks!!! haha

fact 1 about Pizza...it's Brick Oven or go home as far as I'm concerned...nothing tastes as good as a Brick Oven Pie done correctly on the order of Lombardi's NYC and Brooklyn and Hoboken's Grimaldi's or Edgewater/Hackensack's Brooklyn Pizzeria. We have only 2 Brick Oven joints on the list...Ah'Pizz...which practices upscale pizza price gouging with their $15 mini pizzas forcing you to spend more to get an ordinary pie's worth (makes me dislike their entire establishment) and Leone's, which I really want to like but their pie does not stand up to my aforementioned examples. The best pizza on this list (and shockingly not a brick oven pie) is Ruthie's Texas pie with smoked mozz, pesto, marinara and spicy homemade sausage. Montclair, I love you but you need a REALLY GOOD Brick Oven joint badly. Come on Mancinni's!! Please do it right....you have a golden opportunity and a great space.
christian February 16, 2012 at 02:52 AM
DaVinci's was very dissapointing...doesnt taste like Brick Oven at all. Salute is a quasi insulting hoity toity restaurant concept that seems to have nothing to do with making Brick Oven Pizza as i couldnt even find one on the menu. Shameful.
christian February 16, 2012 at 02:58 AM
Sorry to be a Brick Oven Nazi but Ah'Pizz has a long way to go to claim that title...likewise do you enjoy paying $32 for $20 worth of Pizza...the small pie model is price gouging...a concept from the same evil genius that created the half full glass of wine at a full glass price...Good pizza especially good Brick Oven is about so much more than trendy dining tricks like this. Ah'Pizz_a_crap.

My favorite is DaVinci on Bellevue - LOVE the brick oven flavor & thin crust. I hope that no one uses the results of this survey for promotion since it is totally unscientific and bias. I also would not want the Patch to write an article on the results. You state that it is not scientific pole - please respect that with the results. To win, all it takes is the largest employer to get all their employees to vote for their own pizza. :-)

Me and my wife love Nauna's and we've tried pizza from just about every place around. Our oldest son likes Nauna's also but our daughter, likes Ruthies the most. Is there really a "BEST" or it is just what you like best? I've had pizza from places mentioned above that were proclaimed the best and I thought it was mediocre at best. The good thing is here in Montclair we have lots of choices for lots of different tastes and opinions!

I still really like Ah, Pizz', but my new favorite is True North Osteria on Bloomfield Avenue. I find that the quality of ingredients of every other pizzeria simply are not on the same level as these two restaurants. True North flame-grills the pizza; it is crispy and chewy at the same time. I had an extraordinary pie in there with excellent marinara, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil and extremely generous whole slices of prosciutto for $12.00. They also have a wonderful selection of sandwiches, soups and well-done desserts (fresh and not too sweet).
christian February 16, 2012 at 06:14 PM
I had Nauna's and for a standard pizza it was very tasty and they seemed to have a good variety of toppings...I will go back there. I'm just dissapointed that Montclair does not as yet have a truly stellar brick oven joint. Come on Mancinni's and let me eat these words.

I love Villa Victoria and Ah Pizz. After reading the comments here, I tried Soho. OMG!! So good. Completely blew my diet last week, but it was worth it! Delicious!!!

Its not in montclair but STAR TAVERN is the best and its not too far, right by south end
Anne Devereaux April 27, 2012 at 11:41 PM
Star Tavern IS the best, but it's not montclair so no fair. If you look at straight pizza taste, Soho is the best here. However, Nauna's is a close second and when you look at the management there and the service and their commitment to our community, you NEED to keep patronizing this business. The guys at Dino's are nasty, kids are running DaVinci's, etc. Nobody cares about Montclair like the people at Nauna's. (For the record, I'm not an employee!!)
Mike Mosley May 01, 2012 at 04:50 AM
i love dinos. the owners r not nasty at all they just dont take crap. they r like family my parents and now my kids eat there. there grandma slice is the best. i also like how they dont try and oversell there stuff they are who they r kinda
Llaura Rubin December 31, 2012 at 05:02 AM
Nauna's is the best by far.
