Gun Buy-Back in Montclair This Friday, Saturday

Essex County residents can forfeit up to three guns on Feb. 15 and 16 at the Union Baptist Church in Montclair.

 

Montclair and four other municipalities are joining together to get as many guns off the street as possible. 

Montclair Township will co-sponsor a county-wide gun buy-back program in February. Other nearby municipalities joining the effort are East Orange, Irvington, Newark and Orange.

Essex County residents can anonymously turn in up to three guns with no questions asked between 8 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Feb. 15 and 16 at the Union Baptist Church, located at 12-14 Midland Ave. Montclair Police officers will be on hand to collect and secure the weapons. 

Guns will be assessed on a sliding scale, ranging from $50 for an inoperable weapon to up to $250 for an operable assault weapon. The gun buy-back will work on a first come, first served basis and funding is limited.

The Attorney General’s Office will be paying to buy back the guns with criminal forfeiture monies obtained by its Division of Criminal Justice.

The Essex County gun buy-back event is co-sponsored by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Montclair, East Orange, Irvington, Newark and Orange Police departments.
