The story of Jack and the Beanstalk needs no introduction, but this version of the familiar folk tale introduces an assortment of characters. To save his family from starvation, Jack must sell their beloved cow, Buttercup, but ends up trading for a handful of beans. The beans are magic, of course, and sprout intoa beanstalk which reaches into the sky. With the help of his good fairy, Frippery, Jack saves his father and destroysthe evil giant.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
JACK: (male, 10-15) Despite having lost his Father as a small baby, and being dreadfully poor, Jack is unusually optimistic and helpful; in fact the kind of optimism that, more often than not, results in what some people would referto as plain old, “dumb luck”
JACQUELINE: (female, 30-50s) Jack’s Mother is a woman who once had it all and in a flash it was taken away; a pinch of bitterness should flavor all her recollections of that “Good Life”
POULTRY WOMAN: (female, 20-50s) She should reflect a “hen” like quality in her manner, always in a hurry, but no idea why
DAIRY MAID: (female, 20-30s) Don’t forget! She’s the one who brought the beans; one should always ask whather angle is; she always seems to know more than what she lets on
BUTTERCUP: (female, 20- 30s) She sick of the circumstance she has been stuck in and is now looking for that right deal, that will allow her to move on to a better life
FRIPPERY: (female, young 20s) She is a fashion-obsessed fairy in touch with and reflecting all the latest trends in her wardrobe; forever distracted by the ever changing face of what will be the next new reality
JONATHAN: (male, 40-50s) He long ago made his “deal with the Devil” and now he and his nemesis are like easily annoyed college roommate; there is something symbiotic about how he and the Giant relate
COLOSSUS: (male, 20- 40s) Don’t pigeon hole this guy - he just won’t fit; there is more here than just heft of his size and thunder in his voice; in a strange way he too needs companionship
(A PLUS: Experience, or just a great interest, in bringing to life a giant sized, papier-mâché visage).
Sides will be provided.
Performance Dates: April 26 – May 4, 2014.
