A Fine Collection: Treasures from the Vault

This spring Macculloch Hall Historical Museum is exhibiting some of its most popular pieces as well as many seldom-seen treasures which have been in storage. Vivid examples of the antique Oriental rug collection are hung in the museum's first floor gallery, complemented by textbook examples of fine porcelain, silver, glass and furniture collected by Museum founder, W. Parsons Todd. This is a special opportunity to see rarely-exhibited treasures from the collection in the gallery and tour the rest of the museum to see many other pieces in period room settings.  Included in the exhibit are over a dozen Oriental rugs from the Museum’s collection. The exhibit also features documents penned by some of our country’s founding heroes including those signed by George Washington, Dolley Madison and others, and fine furniture such as a walnut English armchair, circa 1720, which was the inspiration for the Museum’s logo with the ornate looping back and shell design.

“A Fine Collection” has a perimeter layout which leaves the center of the room open for a series of speakers and musical programming taking place in conjunction with the exhibit over the next several months.  Programs in conjunction with the exhibit take place with music on the first Sunday at 4:30pm and speakers on the third Sunday of each month through June.

Directed by Dr. Anne Matlack, the performance includes both period works and other songs related to the theme.

On Sunday February 17, at 4:30pm, Museum member and decorative arts collector Ken Miller presents "From Masters to Manufacturers - The Silver industry and Early American Life.”  Mr. Miller will share a brief examination of the early silver industry in the Colonies and newly born United States, focused on the significant changes within this one craft.  It was not just taste and technique that changed during this period, nor was the American political revolution the only upheaval - in fact social and commercial life went through its own revolution during these years and can be witnessed through the stories of early America's silversmiths.
