Montclair State University Talks "Crisis in American Criminal Justice: Why America is the World's Largest Jailer"

FREE SALON SERIES EVENT AT MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY

Wednesday, October 9 at 8pm

7th Floor University Hall Conference Center

The crime is in the numbers: the United States locks up more people than any other country in the world, making it the world’s largest jailer. Although less than 5% of the world’s population lives in the United States, our nation incarcerates over 25% of the world’s prisoners with over 2.3 million people behind bars. America’s prison population has quadrupled since 1980.

Can America fix this broken system? Leading experts will examine the controversial policies, extreme measures and harsh penalties – unheard of in other western countries – that have irreparably harmed communities and individuals.

Featured Panelists:
·      Producer/director and Montclair resident Dawn Porter of the award-winning HBO documentary “Gideon’s Army,” an official selection in the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

·      ACLU’s David Fathi, director of the organization’s Prison Project, an expert in the use of solitary confinement and conditions in “Super Max” prisons.

·      Former Bronx Public Defender Jessica S. Henry, professor of Justice Studies at Montclair State University.

A special screening of a clip from “Gideon’s Army” will start the program and a panel discussion with Q&A will follow. Merril Brown, Director of the School of Communication and Media at Montclair State, will moderate. Light refreshments will be served.

This event is free and open to the public. RSVP at msusalonseries.eventbrite.com. For more information, email Stephanie Wood at woods@mail.montclair.edu or call Emily Eldridge at 973-979-7933.
