The Tidings Brought to Mary

Violaine, a young woman from a prosperous estate who lives in medieval France at the time of Joan of Arc and the Hundred Years war, has simple ambitions: to marry Jacques, the man she loves, to raise a family with him and to work and honor her family’s rich farmland.  However, from the very beginning, Violaine’s holy qualities are evident, and her God has other plans in store for her spurred on by the divine Pierre de Craon, a cathedral builder.  Violaine’s compassion for the suffering Pierre turns the play causing Violaine to sacrifice her own earthly desires, leave her home and ultimately carry out an act of faith that will save her family and her people.  Her bitter and tough sister Mara pulls Violaine away from her destiny but also helps, almost forces her to achieve it. Mara, Jacques and Violaine’s mother Elizabeth represent earthly people who all have flaws of their own, from jealousy to stubbornness to selfishness.  Violaine and her spiritual father Anne Vercors guide them to salvation in this classic yet modern French passion play about forgiveness, compassion and self-sacrifice.
