With The Author: Deb Levy, "Bury the Hot"

Deb Levy, a Montclair author, will appear at Montclair Public Library on Wednesday, December 4 at 7 p.m. to share a story so unbelievable that it remained untold for 50 years in fear of being doubted. Bury the Hot is the extraordinary true story of a childhood lost hiding from Hitler and a lifetime intent on escaping the memories.
Levy was born in Miami, where she grew up celebrating holidays with Sal Wainberg and his family, and he and his wife attended her wedding. Yet, when Wainberg called Levy out of the blue and asked if she knew his story, she had no idea what he was talking about. She did not know that he was once a boy named Szulim living in a Polish shtetl, or that he narrowly missed being herded onto a train bound for Treblinka. She did not know that he hid for two years in a cellar before wandering barefoot for an entire summer at the age of 8 through fields of rye. And Levy did not know that Wainberg’s young life was surrounded by murderous rage.
There was a reason Levy had not known the story: Wainberg had never spoken about his past, not even to his wife. It was not until the end of his life that Wainberg realized he had a need and a responsibility to bear witness. And so he asked Levy to write a book about his experience.
"But don't write some Hollywood tale," Wainberg told her. "I want the truth."
Bury the Hot is the Holocaust story few have the tenacity or courage to share, and explores both a traumatized childhood, and how the repression of it impacts a marriage. Levy will read from her book, answer audience questions, and engage listeners with a poignant discussion of truth, memory, history, faith and family.  The author will sell and sign copies of her book, and donate a portion of the event’s proceeds to the library.
Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public, and the library is handicapped accessible. For more information on this event and the library calendar, please visit www.montclairlibrary.org or call 973-744-0500 ext. 2235.
