Come to Global Mala 2013: "Peace is Powerfull!"

Yogis from all over the Garden State will gather in Newark for an awesome peace event.

Mark your calendars and hurry to your computers and Smartphones to sign up: September 22 is the 7th annual Global Mala NJ, held this year (as it was in 2012) at Newark Schools Stadium. This will be my third Global Mala and I am really looking forward to gathering with yogis from all over New Jersey to celebrate and support the planet’s efforts to achieve peace. As the organizers state, “Peace is Powerfull!”

Global Mala was conceived in 2007 by West Coast yogini Shiva Rea and has spread across the globe (the New Jersey event just happens to be the biggest, brightest and most amazing on the planet). The mission of this extraordinary effort is to promote peace, and to support all kinds of charities and organizations with an aim to counter AIDS, War and Poverty, and to uplift the Environment, Children, Education and locally to support such efforts as relief for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Says NJ Peace Igniter Debby Kaminsky, “We all feel strongly year after year that it’s important to raise awareness and funds for New Jersey centric organizations. This year, we are passionate to do our part to help rebuild our beautiful Garden State. Just because the boardwalks are rebuilt, we know tremendous funds are still needed. We are proud to give 70% of our proceeds this year to Hurricane Sandy Relief.” Community Food Bank of Hillside will also be a recipient this year as they have also endured numerous floods at their facility. All participants are asked to bring non-perishable food to the event that the Food Bank will be collecting.

Whether you are a seasoned yogi or yogini, a novice, or someone who has never practiced yoga before, you can sign up at globalmalanj.org (suggested minimum donation for adults is $27 and $5 for kids but absolutely no one is turned away). The organizers suggest signing up in advance to avoid lines on event day, although if this isn’t possible, walk-ins are welcome. In return you’ll be part of an amazing day of yoga from 9 am to 3 p.m. (doors open at 8:15 a.m.) Mayor Booker is expected to attend this year as he will not be with the President of the U.S. (as he was in 2012!). Yoga studios from all over New Jersey will be participating.

This year’s Newark event is also going to include afternoon “breakout sessions.” Participants can choose from three thirty-minute sessions: Acro Yoga, Family Yoga or Yoga Trance Dance. As always, there will be some remarkable teachers who will join a number of stellar local NJ teachers, including Beryl Bender Birch, Suzanne Bryant, Fred DeVito, Sue Elkind, Elisabeth Halfpapp, Tao Porchon-Lynch (now 95, this is her third NJ Global Mala!), Jillian Pransky, David Romanelli and others. Members of The Newark Fire Department will also be joining in. And let’s not forget this special highlight: Live music for Global Mala will be provided by the always-inspiring Dalien/13Hands.

The first 250 individuals who signed up for Global Mala received gift bags filled with $300+ of great stuff. New this year: A brand new yoga mat for first 100 who make $75+ donation. While you’re there enjoy Chair Massage by NJ Massage and Reflexology by Shanti Massage, and purchase a cool Global Mala Tee (for men and women). And don’t forget the food—healthy and delicious fare by a variety of vendors will be plentiful. With the return of chair yoga and now yoga for special needs this year, this is an event for everyone!

There’s also going to be a wonderful silent auction, with such prizes as a 200 HR TT w/Bright Spirit Yoga, a retreat with Seane Corn, a Kripalu Weekend for two, and a Summer Workshop (and breakfast) at Kripalu with Shiva Rea. 100 percent of the proceeds from the raffle and silent auction go to Global Mala charities, 70% of which goes directly to Hurricane Sandy Relief.

If you’re the mom or dad of little ones, bring the kids along! (7 and under must be accompanied by a parent). There will be lots of great activities for the youngsters and teens, including yoga, art, drumming, Harmony by Karate, and, a visit from “the Street Doctor.” In short, for kids this day will be loads of fun!

Also new this year are two pre-event movie screenings of the movie YOGA IS with the producer and writer, Suzanne Bryant on hand for an after movie discussion. Friday night 7:30pm is at Starseed Yoga in Verona and Saturday, 4pm is at Yoga Morristown.

Says Debby, “We are told year after year that this event is like no other. We all put our hearts into making it authentic and a wonderful experience for the entire New Jersey Community. It is a day of complete calm. It is an example of what everyone would want their communities to be like, a day where everyone accepts everyone for who they wonderfully are and everyone smiles.”

All services and activities at Global Mala are donated and monies from the event go directly to charity and peace. Join with peace-lovers from all over the state to make this the most special Global Mala ever!
