Dear NJ Transit: Please Take Over DeCamp's Bus Routes

Commuter Scott Ballantine laments the current state of the bus service

Dear NJ Transit,

If you are reading this, for the love of all that's holy, PLEASE retake the bus routes covered by DeCamp in West Caldwell and Montclair IMMEDIATELY and end our suffering...PLEASE!!!

I completely agree with every negative review as to the terrible service DeCamp provides. For over six years, I've seen DeCamp's level of service go from bad to worse, and then to atrocious, where it's been for many years now. Just last week, one of their drivers got off on the wrong exit on I-280 and blamed all of the passengers for his mistake! It was one of those moments when you truly questioned if a person, in this case the bus driver, was insane or suffering some sort of delusional episode.

The 33 "Express" from West Caldwell to New York City is late every single morning, no exaggeration. No matter what time you try to catch this bus in the morning, it is always late by a minimum of at least 10 minutes. When it does arrive, there are almost never any seats.

Taking this same route back from New York City at night is not much better. Although you are most likely to get a seat on one of the few buses they run at night, the buses never arrive on time, being late anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes late every single night, even in the summer, during holidays, etc. Other buses from every other bus company are coming and going in a timely manner but not DeCamp. They're always late, with nearly all of the drivers being rude, argumentative and acting like they'd rather be standing in front of a firing squad than drive a bus or interact with people.

DeCamp provides terrible service and needs to be replaced as the transit provider in the Northern New Jersey area. My only hope is that NJ Transit will replace DeCamp with NJ Transit Buses as they do a very good job. Anything would be an improvement over DeCamp and its miserable service.

If DeCamp only stopped at scheduled stops perhaps they wouldn't constantly be late.

I agree with someone else's comment about how horribly most of the bus drivers on Decamp are. There are times that I've felt that the driver looked at me angrily as I got on the bus just because I was getting on the bus. They should realize that if no one got on the bus, then they wouldn't have a job!

At some point, the community is simply going to have to organize to have De Camp's monopoly taken away. Its incompetence following Hurricane Sandy, which has badly compounded all the other challenges to the NJ-NYC commute, is taking a bad toll on all of us. No foresight, no planning, no communication, rudeness, complete indifference to the customers (barring a very very few nice drivers). The best buses are still being run as charters on the side when we desperately need them on the regular routes (no the company won't admit that, but no one has seen those buses!!). If we don't do something about being mad, this will always be our lot. Does anyone know who decides the monopoly? What would be the channels for starting some sort of action against the misery-that-is-De-Camp?

I just finished writing a letter to County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo about DeCamp. Not sure he is the correct person but it's a start. Writing to the DOT did no good, they referred me to DeCamp!
