Drunken Man Hit Parked Vehicles With Grandma's Boyfriend's Car, Cops Say

David Blakely, 23, faces DWI and other charges following alleged incident near Greenwood Avenue apartment building.

A drunken 23-year-old township resident was seen slamming a vehicle he took from his grandmother's boyfriend into several parked cars near a Greenwood Avenue apartment building Sunday, according to the Montclair Police Department.

David Blakely, of Montclair, is facing charges of driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, driving on a suspended license and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, police said.

Officers responded to the area at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a motor vehicle striking several parked cars, according to a department statement. A woman at the scene told police that Blakely, her grandson, was the culprit — and added that he had taken her boyfriend's vehicle without permission. As she spoke, the officers saw Blakely in front of the apartment complex attempting to walk away, police said.

The statement said officers stopped him and immediately detected alcohol on his breath. Police administered sobriety tests, which the man failed, police said.

After several witnesses identified him as the person who hit the parked cars, Blakely was arrested and charged.
