Montclair Police: Beware of Scammers Going Door-to-Door

A call to local police earlier this week prompted cops to issue the warning.

The Montclair Police Department is warning residents to be wary of scammers going door-to-door in the township.

A Gates Avenue resident called police earlier this week to report a suspicious man who had knocked on his door claiming to be from PSE&G. The resident called police but by the time cops arrived the suspected scammer was gone, according to Montclair Police Sgt. Tyrone Williams.

"Typically around holiday time and tax time we see a lot of scam artists," Williams said. "It’s prime time for opportunists."

While no township residents had fallen victim to scammers in recent memory, Williams said, cops are being proactive in issuing a warning to residents here.

"Ask for ID and be safe," he said.
