Email Threatening Flight Originated at Montclair State, Authorities Say

Brazilian citizen allegedly tells Miami-Dade Police the flight 'will go down.'

A Brazilian citizen allegedly sent emails threatening a flight from Miami to Brasilia from a computer located on the campus of Montclair State University, authorities said last week.

Francisco Fernando Cruz, 22, was scheduled to be a passenger on the flight he warned the Miami-Dade Police Department and TAM Airlines "will go down."

Cruz flew from New York to Miami where he was arrested upon exiting the plane. He told police he sent the emails as part of a dare game, authorities said.

Surveillance video from Montclair State allegedly shows Cruz using the kiosk from which the emails originated, according to authorities.

If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

A college official said Monday Cruz is not enrolled at the university.
