Police: Two Teenagers Involved in Thursday's Car Crash

Montclair Police are releasing few details about a car crash Thursday evening that left a 17-year-old driver trapped for about two hours. 

A four-door Jaguar crashed into a tree in Yantacaw Brook on Yantacaw Brook Road around 7 p.m. on Thursday. There were two teenagers in the car: a 17-year-old driver and a 15-year-old passenger, according to Traffic Bureau Sgt. Stephanie Egnezzo.

The passenger was able to be removed from the car immediately. The driver, however, was trapped between the car and a tree. 

More than 15 emergency vehicles lit up the street, and there were more than two dozen emergency personnel on the scene from Montclair and surrounding towns.  

Firemen used power tools to remove the roof and both doors on the driver’s side of the car in order to reach the driver. Emergency personnel finally removed the driver from the crash at around 9:15 p.m. and placed him on a stretcher.  

Both teenagers were taken to a nearby hospital for injuries, but police declined to comment on where they were taken. As of Friday, one of the teenagers remained in the hospital.  

The small brook lies behind Northeast Elementary School. The brook is dotted with trees, is dimly lit, and borders the rear yards of homes. 

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, said Egnezzo.
