Second Teen Charged in South Orange 'Knockout' Spree

A 17-year-old from Newark turned himself in following a string of assaults, report says.

A 17-year-old from Newark was arrested Thursday after South Orange detectives determined the teen was involved in an "unprovoked assault" of a pedestrian on Saturday, Nov. 16, police said.

Romaine McKenzie, 18, of Irvington, was arrested earlier this week for his alleged involvement in the same string of assaults prompting the Newark teen to turn himself in to police, News 12 New Jersey reported.

Detectives used a single tip and social media to track down the two men, South Orange Police Chief James Chelel told the network.

Three people were assaulted within one mile of each other and just a few hours apart over the course of that weekend. The two incidents seem to follow the trend of a game called “knockout” in which youths try to knock out passersby with one punch and steal their belongings.

None of the South Orange victims were knocked unconscious, but the chief says one man suffered a concussion, the News 12 report said.

"It's a cowardly act and they can play it all they want in jail,"Chelel said.
