Jilian K. Sofield was sworn in Monday as a Montclair Police Department probationary officer by Municipal Clerk Linda Wanat in the township’s Council Chambers.
Sofield holds an associate’s degree in Police Science/Criminal Justice from Thomas Edison State College. She previously served as a corrections officer with Middlesex County, a civilian police dispatcher and an emergency medical technician.
She graduated from the Morris County Police Academy Alternate Route program in June.
As a probationary officer, she will undergo a 12-week field-training program, which will pair her with specially trained, experienced, patrol officers.
The training curriculum covers a wide range of topics from departmental operations, at-scene criminal investigations, and handling domestic violence incidents, to traffic enforcement and issues of homeland security. Trainees rotate through different trainers and shifts while receiving daily standardized evaluations based on their performance.
These evaluations are periodically reviewed by the Field Training Program Supervisor. Their progress is then evaluated prior to completion of training and final assignment to the Patrol Division by the Chief of Police.
