Woman Robbed on Bloomfield Avenue With False Threat of a Gun

Kyle Carmichael, of Newark, and underaged minor were arrested on a bus shortly after the robbery.

A Newark man and an underage minor robbed a 23-year-old woman of her cell phone on Tuesday saying they had a handgun, which later turned out to be false, according to Montclair police.

Kyle Carmichael, 19, and his female accomplice, whose name is withheld because of her age, were arrested on Tuesday after they allegedly robbed a woman of her iPhone while she was walking on Bloomfield Avenue near Pine Street shortly before 8 a.m., according to reports.

The woman, who is from Linden, told police when Carmichael and the minor approached her, he had his hand in his waistband. He threatened her with a gun if she did not hand over her phone.

The woman immediately gave the two her phone, and then Carmichael and the girl fled toward the bus stop at Bloomfield and Gates avenues.

After arriving at the scene, Montclair police found a NJ Transit bus at a nearby intersection. Carmichael and the girl were on the bus and fit the descriptions given by the woman.

Police found the phone, which had a distinctive Marilyn Monroe phone cover on it, underneath a bus seat in front of where Carmichael and the girl were sitting.

The two were searched and no weapons were found, according to police.

The pair were arrested and charged with robbery, making terroristic threats to kill and other crimes.
