Incumbent Gill Wins 34th District

Unofficial results show Montclair resident defeating former Clifton councilman.

Nia H. Gill of Montclair will continue to represent the 34th Legislative District in the New Jersey Senate.

The Democratic incumbent appears to be the clear winner of Tuesday's race in which she was challenged by Republican candidate Joseph S. Cupoli of Clifton.

With 80% of votes reported by the Essex County Clerk's Office, unofficial results show Gill with 16,591 votes, or 90.71% of the vote, and Cupoli well behind in the Democratic stronghold with 1,667, or 9.11% of votes.

In Passaic County, Cupoli is slightly ahead with 5,468 votes to Gill's 4,950 votes, with 33 of 52 districts reporting, according to the county clerk's office.

Gill, 65, has served on the state senate since 2002. She previously served on the General Assembly from 1994 to 2001.

Gill has been the primary sponsor of more than 100 bills, including the "New Jersey Health Benefit Exchange Act" and several measures to tighten gun control.

Cupoli is a former Clifton City Council member. He is co-owner of P&A Auto Parts, which has 10 locations in North Jersey.

The 34th District represents Montclair, Orange, East Orange and Clifton.
