Landmark Designation Could Save Church From Demolition

The Township of Montclair may add another building to its list of historic landmarks.

The township's Historic Preservation Commission has nominated the former Montclair Heights Reformed Church building at 71 Mt. Hebron Road as a candidate for historic designation, and the Montclair Council Tuesday night referred the building to the Planning Board for review.

Dwindling membership forced the church to close its doors in August 2011, according to NorthJersey.com.

Owners are now considering selling it and are not in favor of historic designation, Montclair Planning Director Janice Talley told the governing body Tuesday.

The stone building stands at the intersection of Valley Road and is flanked by Mount Hebron Cemetery.

A portion of the building has been leased to the Calvary Chapel of Montclair, a non-denominational church focussed on bible study, and the Watchung Co-op Preschool is also a tenant.

Buildings which have been declared historic landmarks in Montclair include: The Georgian Inn located at 37 North Mountain Ave., The Crawford Crews building located at 210 Bloomfield Ave., and The Clark House located at 108 Orange Road.

The historic James Howe House, also known as the "former slave house", located at 369 Claremont Ave., was the site of a fire earlier this year.
