New Committee Aims to Curb Pedestrian Accidents

Group to work on 'Drive With Care in Montclair' and 'Cross With Care in Montclair' campaign.

Montclair officials have taken a step toward addressing pedestrian safety.

The mayor and council approved the creation of a Pedestrian Traffic Safety Committee Tuesday night.

“I believe over the past three years there have been 14 pedestrians hit by cars and two fatalities,” Councilwoman Robin Schlager said Wednesday.

Schlager will serve as council liaison on the committee, which will also include Township Engineer Kim Craft, Alex Kent, Safe Roads to School Coordinator for Montclair, and Sgt. Stephanie Egnezzo of the Montclair Police Traffic Bureau.

The group will work on a pedestrian safety awareness campaign, “Drive With Care in Montclair” and “Cross With Care in Montclair.” Logos will be unveiled by the end of the summer.

Another committee goal is to standardize the crosswalks. The township currently has as many as seven different styles of crosswalks — stenciled, faux brick, white lines and others — which could be confusing to drivers, Schlager explained.

The group will also work with schools and seek grant money for the township.

Once the committee has its first meeting, criteria will be set for additional members, Schlager told the council Tuesday night.
