Salt Shortage Could Mean Dangerous Roads in Montclair

Township urges motorists to use caution and allow extra time for their commute.

The township won’t be able to salt slippery roadways due to a salt shortage, local officials warned Wednesday.

“A freezing rain advisory is in effect for our area, with temperatures just above freezing creating a possibility for icing and slippery roads,” according to Montclair spokesperson Katya Wowk. “The township’s salt supply remains very low and we will not be able to salt township roads if they do become slippery.”

The township has urged commuters to be aware that because roads may be hazardous, travelers should allow extra time in their commute.

“Department of Community Services crews are working around town removing snow and widening our narrow roadways,” Wowk said. “Some work is taking place earlier in the morning before traffic builds up and the bulk of the clearing is taking place overnight when the traffic is minimal.

“Removing the snow and trucking it to areas throughout town is a slow and time-consuming task and we expect to be working on this for several days.”
