State Senate Challenger Endorsed By Former NJ Attorney General

Mark Alexander, of Montclair, is running for state Senate and seeking the Democratic party's endorsement in the primary.

Recently, former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey endorsed state Senate candidate Mark Alexander in the 34th District Democratic Primary.

Harvey was the first African-American Attorney General in New Jersey when he was appointed to the post in 2003, and served as a first assistant in the U.S. Attorney’s Office and as chairman of the cabinet-level New Jersey Domestic Security Preparedness Task Force.

“Mark Alexander is the best choice in the 34th District because of his independence, credentials, and work in the community,” said Harvey.

“As a former Senior Advisor to President Obama, I know Mark can bring fresh ideas to break up the status quo in Trenton and get things done for working families in New Jersey.”

As attorney general, Harvey negotiated two of the largest securities settlement payments in New Jersey history involving insider-trading cases and restructured the Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor, turning it into one of the most effective insurance fraud prosecution offices in the nation.

“I am honored to get the endorsement of a man who broke through barriers and served at the highest level of New Jersey government,” stated Alexander. “Mr. Harvey is an example and role model for our young people across New Jersey, and showed us that anything is possible.

"I will rely on him during this campaign and as a State Senator for his expertise on so many important public safety matters effecting the 34th District.”

A Montclair resident since 1995, Alexander is a professor at Seton Hall University School of Law and former senior advisor to President Obama.

He worked in a number of capacities for Obama during the 2008 campaign, including as a National Policy Director and New Jersey State Director.

Alexander will face incumbent Sen. Nia Gill (D-34) for the Democratic endorsement in the summer. Gill, the Senate President Pro Tempore, is a 10 year veteran in the New Jersey Senate.

The 34th Legislative District includes Clifton, East Orange, Montclair, and Orange.
