Elementary school students in Montclair have made a lasting contribution to both a local soup kitchen and the environment.

Students from Bradford recently participated in a walk-a-thon at Montclair State University to raise money for Toni’s Soup Kitchen. They walked up to six miles and raised $2,600, according to their principal, Naomi Kirkman.

“We are very proud of our students for embracing the importance of helping our community!” Kirkman said.

The funds will be used to purchase a new dishwasher for the soup kitchen located at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on South Fullerton Ave.

“We are going to be able to move away from disposable dish-wear and we are going to use reusable plates and knives and forks and all that,” said Anne Mernin, Director of Outreach for St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

The new appliance will help save the soup kitchen money in the long term.

“We will reduce our cost of producing a meal and at the same time we are going to be much more Earth-friendly," Mernin said.
