Did You Get Your Top Kindergarten Choice?

Montclair Public Schools mailed kindergarten and elementary placement letters to families earlier this month — and the chatter has begun. 

Did you get your first choice? Or even your second or third? 

Under the guidelines of Montclair’s magnet system, parents file forms in the spring to request their top six school choices. 

Parent preferences may have to do with the school's magnet theme or other considerations, such as proximity to home or arrival and dismissal times.

A number of criteria are considered:

• Whether a student has a sibling already at the school
• Space availabity
• Specific instructional needs of student
• Geographical zones, town is divided into three zones

The district then uses a computerized lottery system to place students.
