Superintendent-Community Clash Topic of Washington Post Piece by District Grandmother

Columbia Journalism School Professor LynNell Hancock featured in "The Answer Sheet" Wednesday.

A mother of two Montclair High School graduates and grandmother of a fifth-grader in town has a piece Wednesday in "The Answer Sheet" on WashingtonPost.com.

LynNell Hancock, a professor at Columbia University's school of journalism, puts into perspective the rising conflict between district parents and teachers and rookie Superintendent of Schools Penny MacCormack. 

According to Hancock, MacCormack has brought to the township a leadership style and approach to education that clashes with the community's ideals.

"It’s not the children, the quality of the schools or the town’s democratic values that have changed," Hancock writes. "It’s a paradigm shift in school leadership, a top-down technocratic approach that narrows its focus to “fixing” schools by employing business strategies."
