Former MHS Guidance Department Head Leaves A Message for Seniors

Scott White asks Montclair High School seniors to 'make a statement.'

On Wednesday night, a message said to be from former Montclair High School Director of Guidance Scott White was posted to a Facebook page associated with students who attend Montclair High School.

The message read:

"To all seniors who read this: You have an opportunity to make a statement in a few days. Put messages on labels that you can put on your mortar boards (those funny square graduation hats) that express your ideals: "I am not a number" "a school is a community" "teachers matter" "give teachers respect". Wait to be seated, take off your hats, put the messages on and replace your mortar boards. Show that you care. Show that you believe that the administration has reduced you to pawns in a grand experiment, a fatally flawed one. Ask any teacher, any teacher, "are you happy here" "are you treated with respect" "would you leave if you could" and any teacher who gives you an honest answer will tell you the same thing: There is a total lack of trust, respect and dignity."

This message comes in the wake of a series of changes implemented in the Montclair Public School District over the past year.

Many of these changes, some associated with the implementation of national Common Core Standards, were ill-received by members of the Montclair Public School community.
