Power Outages Darken 4 Schools Wednesday

All after school activities are canceled on Thursday, according to the district.

[Updated: 8:05 p.m. Wednesday]

The first day of school for Montclair students in more than a week since Hurricane Sandy was interrupted by power outages today.

The following four schools experienced intermittent power outages on Wednesday between 3 and 5 p.m., said Superintendent Penny MacCormack.

  • Montclair High School
  • Glenfield Middle School
  • Bradford Elementary School
  • Bullock Elementary School

Students attending aftercare and enrichment programs had to be picked up early by their parents.

Due to the potential of continuing outages, the district is canceling all after school activities on Thursday. The YMCA aftercare program will take place as scheduled, and decision has yet to be announced about Montclair High School athletics on Thursday.

"We are going to let [the high school] make those decision in a more timely fashion," said MacCormack.

MacCormack said there have been no reports of electrical irregularities at the district's seven other schools.

Rolling power outages are expected to continue in the township while PSE&G crews repair electrical lines, but MacCormack said it should not adversely affect regular school hours.

While the snow continues to accumulate from the nor'easter Athena on Wednesday, classes are still scheduled to be in session on Thursday.

One additional worry about tonight-what if the town plows? On Warren Place, where I live, and a lot of other streets there are extension cords stretched across the roadway, some looped around trees, fire hydrants, etc. I just spoke to Rob Bianco (7PM). He thought he would know by about 8PM or so whether they would have to plow or be able to get away with salting. I’ll call him a little after 8Pm and post again. Might want to let your neighbors know if they have the cords out there.

Spoke to Bianco again. The town will almost certainly plow tonight . Please get the cords off the streets.
