Sorbino Launches School Board Candidacy

More than 50 people turn out for the school board campaign rally at Pal's Cabin.

School board candidate Joe Sorbino kicked off his candidacy Tuesday as he prepares for the final two months of the campaign.

A crowd of at least 50 people came out to Pal’s Cabin to support Sorbino that night, including School Board member Sandra Mordecai, Councilman Joe Krakoviak, and former Councilman Renard Barnes.

“I’m here to let the good folks in town know who I am, what I stand for and what my platform is,” said Sorbino.

The election Nov. 6 will have incubment Michelle Casalino, and challengers Sorbino, Ronald Charles and Adam Kraemer on the ballot contending for two three-year seats on the Board of Education. For information about the candidates, click here.

Sorbino, a veteran and a certified public manager, told the crowd he is running to increase student achievement, and bring more transparency and fiscal responsibility to the district. His involvement in the community, he added, comes from his dedication as a father of two school-aged children.

“I’m a dad with children in the school district ... so I want to make sure we are doing everything we can to prepare our children,” said Sorbino. However, he added that “for those that don’t have children in the school district, you find that one other benefit of having a good school district is that we have high property values, not just higher property taxes.”

The campaign rally had a handful of speakers supporting Sorbino. Barnes said residents of the township have the chance with this election to “reshape the leadership and direction of our board and this district.”

Resident Rosary Morelli agreed with Barnes, adding, “We are at the crossroads with this Board of Education. ... It is important to change the face of that Board of Education.”

Mordecai said she and Sorbino have similar positions on many issues, and she could use his help on the board.

“I am supporting Joe Sorbino because I believe he is the right candidate,” said Mordecai. “He has new ideas; he is a fresh face and a fresh voice .... I believe he can do the job. The dedication, the commitment, the community service is all there.”

Good luck to Mr. Sorbino and all of the candidates. Before we cast our votes we should consider our property tax bills and vote for the candidates who have pledged to serve for our best interests.
