Multiple Exhibits Open in Montclair This Weekend

The Montclair Art Museum and the George Segal Gallery at Montclair State University will both kick off their 2013-14 seasons, unveiling exhibits over the weekend. 

MAM will celebrate its centennial year with exhibitions that highlight the museum’s collections with an emphasis on work from New Jersey. Multiple exhibits open Sunday, Sept. 22.

The George Segal Gallery's Triumph of Philippine Art, curated by Director of the George Segal Gallery, M. Teresa Lapid Rodriguez, a Philippine-born artist/art historian, opens Saturday, Sept. 21. Coming at a time when there is a surge in interest in Asian art, particularly Filipino works, the exhibit is said to be the first to use art to tell the story of the country's history.

—Looking Forward: Gifts of Contemporary Art from the Patricia A. Bell Collection

This exhibition will feature a selection of contemporary art donated over the past 10 years by New Jersey–based donor Patricia A. Bell; shown together here for the first time, her gifts have both shaped and strengthened MAM’s contemporary art collection.

The third in MAM's annual New Directions series of contemporary art exhibitions will be a major new outdoor sculpture by acclaimed artist Jean Shin.

Two works by the multidisciplinary artist Monika Bravo will be on view on MAM’s outdoor video monitors.

Two works by the pioneering Conceptual artist Robert Barry, based in Teaneck, New Jersey, will be on view at MAM.

Opening Reception: Saturday, Sept. 21, 2 to 5 p.m.

This unique retrospective is the first exhibit to ever specifically use artwork to tell the nation’s political story, beginning with the oppression of the martial law period (1972-1986), leading up to the 1986 non-violent “revolution that surprised the world” and ultimately resulting in the vibrant and robust art of a free society at the turn of the 21st century.
